The start of a new school year brings fresh opportunities for students to learn, grow, and prepare for the future. While classroom learning lays an important foundation, leadership experiences outside of school can have an equally lasting impact. Programs that encourage students to step outside their comfort zones, explore career opportunities, and connect with their communities help shape confident young adults who are ready for whatever comes next.
That's exactly what the Potter County Education Council (PCEC) aims to do through the Potter County Youth Leadership (PCYL) Program. Offered at no cost to participating students, this unique program helps high school students develop leadership skills, discover local career opportunities, and build meaningful relationships with community leaders, all while gaining a deeper appreciation for the place they call home.
A Leadership Experience Beyond the Classroom
The Potter County Youth Leadership Program is open to students in grades 10 through 12 from participating school districts across Potter County. Running from September through March, the program brings students together for seven full-day sessions hosted at locations throughout the county.
Each session explores a different aspect of the community, including local government, business, agriculture, human services, volunteerism, environmental stewardship, and post-secondary education. Rather than learning through lectures alone, students participate in interactive activities, visit local organizations, and hear directly from professionals who are making a difference throughout the region.
By experiencing these industries firsthand, students gain a broader understanding of the many opportunities available within their own communities while beginning to think more intentionally about their future.
