From Classroom Curiosity to Career Confidence: How Career Mentors Help Local Students
Every student has wondered, "What do I want to be when I grow up?" For some, the answer comes naturally. For many others, it takes time, experience, and encouragement to discover a career that fits their interests and strengths.
That's why career exploration is so important, and why the Potter County Education Council (PCEC) is committed to helping students connect classroom learning with real-world opportunities. Through its Career Mentor Program, PCEC gives students the chance to explore careers, meet local professionals, and gain valuable experiences that help them make confident decisions about their future.
Helping Students See What's Possible
Choosing a career is one of the biggest decisions a young person will make, but meaningful career exploration shouldn't begin during senior year. When students start learning about different industries and occupations early, they have more time to discover what excites them, develop relevant skills, and make informed choices about high school courses, college, technical training, or entering the workforce.
PCEC's Career Mentor Program supports K–12 students throughout Potter and McKean counties by bringing career education directly into local schools. Working alongside counselors, teachers, and administrators, Career Mentors help students connect their interests with meaningful career pathways while introducing them to the many opportunities available throughout the region.
Whether a student dreams of working in healthcare, manufacturing, education, agriculture, public safety, the skilled trades, or another field, the program helps them understand the steps it takes to get there.
Bringing Careers to Life
Reading about a career is one thing. Meeting professionals, visiting workplaces, and experiencing different industries firsthand is something entirely different.
Career Mentors coordinate hands-on learning experiences that help students see what a typical workday looks like while building relationships with local employers. These opportunities may include:
- Job shadowing experiences
- Guest speakers from local businesses and organizations
- Career fairs and industry exploration events
- Mock interviews and resume workshops
- Internships and work-based learning opportunities
These experiences allow students to ask questions, learn from professionals, and better understand the skills employers are looking for. They also help students see how the lessons they're learning in school connect to future careers.
